Welcome to the ChatSniff Project Home!

ChatSniff is an easy to use program for Linux that monitors, or "sniffs" networks for AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! and Jabber instant messages.

It requires recent versions of python (>= 2.4), python-gtk2 (>= 2.6), python-glade2 (>= 2.6), and tethereal (>= 0.10.10).
python-pyao (for sound) and gksu are optional, but recommended (the deb and rpm packages require them).

This will surprise no one, but this project is near death. It is in desperate need of refactoring; when I wrote it I didn't understand what pythonic meant, and designed it in an egregious parody of OOP. I doubt I can sustain the interest necessary to tackle a complete rewrite, which is what it needs. Maybe someday? Honestly I expected the major instant message clients to have fixed the security issue this program exposes by now and enabled encryption by default, but AFAIK this hasn't happened (yet?), strangely. If I'd known they weren't going to close the security hole, I would've made an effort at maintenance.

A few other noteworthy items: shortly after releasing the latest, and now ancient, version of this software, I changed my email address, presented here backwards, to lavabit.com@keriremovethisspamstuffckson, so any and all email directed to kurt@classicnet.net since that time were not received; sorry about that. Also, several people have reported that the windows port actually does work with some wireless cards. Oops.

If some people are still using this goofy mess, I might be motivated to get off my ass and fix a few things, but it's hard to see that happening. On the other hand, the project statistics are kinda surprising...

Fixed a dumb bug in the sound code.

----------------

Jul 14, 05:

Fixed a bug in the debian package; should work for debian stable now.

Jul 13, 05:

First release, 0.99. Please test it, and give feedback here.

The Windows port is finished, but because Windows can't sniff wireless networks, it's pretty useless, and it has a few bugs. I'll update and post it after 1.0 is out the door.

Have fun!
