Welcome to the ChatSniff Project Home!

ChatSniff is an easy to use program for Linux that monitors, or "sniffs" networks for AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! and Jabber instant messages.

It requires recent versions of python (>= 2.4), python-gtk2 (>= 2.6), python-glade2 (>= 2.6), and tethereal (>= 0.10.10).
python-pyao (for sound) and gksu are optional, but recommended (the deb and rpm packages require them).

Honestly I expected the major instant message clients to have fixed the security issue this program exposes by now and enabled encryption by default, but AFAIK this hasn't happened (yet?), strangely. If I'd known they weren't going to close the security hole, I would've made an effort at maintenance. Also, several people have reported that the windows port actually does work with some wireless cards. Oops.

New Release: ChatSniff 1.0

1.0 is finally here. Tons of new features and bug fixes; among the highlights:
30% reduction in code size
1/4 the cpu use (under high traffic)
Reduced memory footprint
Improved interface (thx brad)
Windows port now available

For a complete list, see the Changelog.

Jul 27, 05:

New Release: ChatSniff 0.99.2

Couple of fairly minor bug fixes. See Changelog.

Jul 14, 05:

New Release: ChatSniff 0.99.1

Fixed a dumb bug in the sound code.

Jul 14, 05:

Fixed a bug in the debian package; should work for debian stable now.

Jul 13, 05:

First release, 0.99. Please test it, and give feedback here.

The Windows port is finished, but because Windows can't sniff wireless networks, it's pretty useless, and it has a few bugs. I'll update and post it after 1.0 is out the door.

Have fun!
