Welcome to the ChatSniff Project Home!

ChatSniff is an easy to use program for Linux that monitors, or "sniffs" networks for AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! and Jabber instant messages.

It requires recent versions of python (>= 2.4), python-gtk2 (>= 2.6), python-glade2 (>= 2.6), and tethereal (>= 0.10.10).
python-pyao (for sound) and gksu are optional, but recommended (the deb and rpm packages require them).

News:

Jan 19, 08:

Honestly I expected the major instant message clients to have fixed the security issue this program exposes by now and enabled encryption by default, but AFAIK this hasn't happened (yet?), strangely. If I'd known they weren't going to close the security hole, I would've made an effort at maintenance. Also, several people have reported that the windows port actually does work with some wireless cards. Oops.

Jul 13, 05:

First release, 0.99. Please test it, and give feedback here.

The Windows port is finished, but because Windows can't sniff wireless networks, it's pretty useless, and it has a few bugs. I'll update and post it after 1.0 is out the door.

Have fun!
